Hindu treatment of criminals:
Danda, is the Hindu way of punishing wrongdoers and attempts to make sure the crime in never repeated and that criminals learn from their mistakes. There are three mains steps in Danda that is incapacitation, deterrence and rehabilitation. Firstly, incapacitation aims to prevent the committing of a crime again, some ways of this to stop the offender to offend is to punish them with death, banishment, imprisonment or mutilation (injury). This ensures that the crime will less often be commit again but some of these are not effective. Secondly, deterrence is the next goal of Hindu punishment. This is ensured by showing others on what will happen to offenders, like imprisonment of death, this tries to reduce the number of people of trying to commit a certain serious crime. Finally, the final stage is rehabilitation, someone who commits a crime should be punishment in a way that they will learn from their mistakes and most likely never repeat the crime. It will improve the offender’s character, so they turn out to be a better person when they leave jail and it will set the person onto the right and peaceful path.

Arguments for and against capital punishment:
Some Hindus belief that capital punishment is right as it is part of the key teaching, Danda. Incapacitation, which is a key part in Danda, says you should stop people from committing crimes again, so one of the methods is to use capital punishment, to ensure dangerous criminals cannot commit the same crime again and are not harmful society as they are dead.
Some people argue that capital punishment is forbidden since capital punishment is where you take life of someone else, so it contradicts with key teachings in Hinduism. First of all, ahimsa. Ahimsa is the teaching of compassion and non-injure, so you must not hurt others and you must treat people equally. This leads on to karma. Karma is a belief where the actions you do have consequences. So if you do good actions, you will expect good things to happen in your future. Since killing someone (like in capital punishment) is bad, will give you bad karma, so a bad life and a bad afterlife. This is why some Hindus don’t take part in capital punishment, and capital punishment is given to the rarest of people/cases, in a country with a huge population.
